2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 300 Sport Used. What the manufacturer says: The brand’s best-selling car, the largest model family and the most heterogeneous clientele – when Mercedes product manager Michael Hartmann talks about the C-Class, he does not save on superlatives. This also applies to the model maintenance, which is now given to the series after four years of running the current model. Because that is the largest in the history, explains Hartmann. The vehicle series started in 1982 with the “Baby Benz”. He gives two numbers as justification. Of the approximately 11,500 components of the car around 6500 have been changed or replaced, so the product manager. He speaks therefore full-bodied of the “new C-Class”.
We noticed that as much as the developers of the C-Class have changed, the car remains a familiar car – in the best sense of the word. Most innovations are only cosmetic or only develop over time. Other innovations Mercedes already in the E or the S-class.
These include, for example, the new steering wheel with the Blackberry buttons, with which you can control almost all functions of the infotainment system. The massage seats and the so-called Energizing functions, for which Mercedes has combined climate control, ambient lighting, music sprinkling and a seat massage for various wellness programs, also come from the upper class. Also from the S-Class comes the Intelligent Drive – a function that bundles assistance systems and linked with the navigation data. Thus, the driver is at times a supporting actor, who actually only has to take pro forma into the steering wheel.
Where Mercedes could not grab directly on the shelf of the large series, the available technology was at least adapted. So now also behind the steering wheel of the C-Class emblazoned a digital instrument cluster, which is however installed as a solitary and does not melt with the large screen on the dashboard. The voice control can now also be used to open the windows or to operate the air conditioning.
What has not changed at all is the driving experience and handling of the C-Class. Yes, the chassis have also fine tuned the suspension, but it has not been fundamentally changed. The C-Class remains the cozy alternative among the premium offerings in this class. And the biggest compliment for the C 300 tested here is that you do not notice the new engine. Finally, sits a comparatively puny 2-liter four-cylinder under the hood, which moves the sedan, however, surprisingly effortless and fleet-footed. But at 258 hp and 370 Nm of torque that is actually no wonder. It is rather surprising that the turbo gasoline engine depending on the driving style pleasantly quiet and reserved or strong and growling, but never overstrained sounds strained.
Perhaps the greatest innovation in the C-Class has nothing at all to do with driving and, ideally, remains unused anyway. Because as the first Mercedes, the car gets a kind of alarm system against parking bumps. The motion detectors remain active even when the car is parked and register immediately when the car is touched even slightly. So that the owner learns as quickly as possible, an alarm goes to the “Mercedes Me” app of the smartphone. Technically, it would even be possible to record the license plate of the accident opponent with the aid of the surrounding cameras and thus determine the holder of the accident vehicle; Driver’s escape useless so to speak. However, to run the legal examination, it says at Mercedes.
You have to know: The revised C-Class will be available in July and will continue to be offered in four body versions – as a sedan for at least 35,034 euros, as a station wagon called T-model for 36,700 euros upwards, as a coupe (from 40,466 euros) or as a convertible (from 48,070 euros).
There are two petrol premieres in the C-Class. Apart from the tested C-Class 300, there is the C 200 with a 1.5 liter engine and 184 hp. What makes the engine interesting is a 48 volt belt starter, which acts as an electric backer and makes the drive a mild hybrid (average consumption 6.0 liters). Also with the diesel engines there is replenishment. There holds a new four-cylinder with 1.6 or 2.0 liter displacement, which is offered in the power levels 122, 150 or 194 hp. And yes, AMG may also participate in the novelties and donate the C 43 a power syringe; because the V6 engine now comes to 390 instead of 367 hp so far.
We will not forget that: The big screen, which now sits freely above the dashboard. It looks good, but it is still a disappointment. Because unlike in the smaller and cheaper A-Class, this is still not a touch screen despite the large infotainment update.
